Through the growing pains of organizing and sustaining hundreds of direct community action events, the fire in Portland never ceased to burn. Artists Emery Barnes, Joseph Blake, Linneas Boland-Godbey, Daveed Jacobo, Mariah Harris, and Byron Merritt share their perspectives and purpose in this exhibition:In solidarity with the national response to George Floyd’s murder during the late Spring of 2020, Portlanders were called to show up for Black lives and dismantle white supremacy-inherently perpetuated by our conventional systems and institutions that for centuries worked against Black human beings. In Summer 2022, the Portland Art Museum presents a special exhibition of more than 60 works by local BIPOC photographers made during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. ![]() ![]() ![]() I assume it's something to do with security certificates. I have to set the date manually before I can surf the internet. I have no idea if the capacitors will need replacing my TiBook's date battery has died. I've never been fond of the case design and I doubt it'll be a valuable antique in the future. It'll run up to 10.5.8 and down to OS 9 it'll boot OS 9. Upgrading it with an MSATA SSD should cost about £30 tops. You might also find the port arrangement awkward they're under a flap at the back. A PCMCIA USB 2 card might be a good idea in that case because there are only two USB ports. ![]() The Airport card uses old-fashioned encryption so I have to use a dongle instead. The 1280x854 screen is enough for the internet and it has a proper full-sized DVI port (VGA with the earlier models). TenFourFox is slow but you get used to it. Performance-wise it doesn't feel that much slower than my 1.67ghz aluminium G4. There were lid protectors at the time but no-one seems to have bought them. Also the flaking paint is irritating, as is the tendency of the chassis to pick up dents. My understanding is that the biggest issue going forward is the weak hinges, which can't easily be lubricated and are difficult to repair. In my experience the later aluminium G4 PowerBooks and particularly the iBooks tended to die from motherboard and GPU failures, the TiBook not so much. I wonder if 1ghz was pushing the edge of what the design could cope with. I need to redo the thermal paste at some point. I've owned two - I sold the first one and currently have a 1ghz TiBook in okay condition. It's still not fast, but it's more tolerable and works with modern routers. The internal Airport card is slooooand requires no drivers. I installed 10.5 because I could, but 10.4 should be a bit faster. I bought one knowing that it was broken, but OWC still has lots and lots of these drives available. The linked pad is bigger than what I got, and you won't need the whole area.īroken disk drive. 1.5mm is a little thick, but I worry that 1mm would have been a little thin. I replaced it with some thin ThermalGrizzly pads and got the temps way, way down. It's not really paste, though, it's a thin thermal "gauze", more or less. The bus is slow, so even with the SSD it's not particularly fast, but it's a lot faster than the HDD. I got an mSATA adapter to get rid of that moving part and get better performance. Spinning hard disks are slower than you remember. 30-60 min is more than enough for moving between my desk and my TV, and it lasts much longer while sleeping. ![]() Main batteries die: You can get sketchy Chinese ones, but I was able to find a used first-party battery that still holds a charge. You'll have to solder it on to the PROM module, but it's very easy Look for the actual battery size, don't use keywords like "apple" or "powerbook" (they double or triple the price). They're a slightly unusual size, but you can buy replacements from a shop in the UK. ![]() Pretty easy to work on, and I have one in basically brand new condition for less than $200 all-in. It's got perfect coverage of all the eras I care about, and you can still buy replacement case parts on eBay. I got one with a busted case and CD drive on eBay for about $60, and spent ~$150 to completely restore it. I bought and restored a 1GHz TiBook to use for PPC gaming. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pen and paper are pretty universal, so if the format for eBooks is closed, then I may as well just learn shorthand.Īnd finally, I am only interested in fully open formats there are those that are “open enough” to convert from, but not so open that any OS can create them, or vice versa. Open formats also ensure that anyone can create an eBook. This does not happen with a base level of an open format. Technology defeats itself when you get a book in one format and have a device or operating system (OS) that only reads any other format but that. ![]() The most obvious advantage to an open format for eBooks is that an open format can be converted to any other format, meaning that your book can be read on any device. Why open?įirst of all, let’s establish that we’ll look only at open file formats in this article, and why. I appreciate that I can take notes at a conference in Restructured Text and convert my notes with Pandoc to a fully hyperlinked ebook to review on my plane ride home. I also appreciate the ability they give me to find my favorite quotes or passages, and the fact that readers who have limited sight can enlarge the text so they can read it, or that fully blind readers can have their computer read the text to them. Sure, I might not actually read the entire works of Jules Verne whilst waiting in line at the grocer’s, but it comforts me to know that I have them just in case. I appreciate that eBooks enable me to take several volumes of text with me everywhere I go without actually having to bear the weight of several reams of paper. I have been a user of them for far longer than there have been dedicated readers. That’s great for leveling up on how much you read, but it raises the question of what open file formats are out there for eBooks, and which ones are best.Įbooks are great. Electronic books, or eBooks, have been around for a long time, but convenient devices upon which to read them are a relatively recent development.īetween mobile phones, tablets, and dedicated eBook readers, chances are you have some device in your life that you can use to read an electronic book upon. ![]() ![]() ![]() On the day check-in was smooth with large numbers, utilising the hive room gave us a good base.
